Push Mower Reviews

Push mowers are no longer a one dimensional yard maintenance tool. There are many push mowers with a variety of features and eco friendly options for just about any property owner. Check out the best push mower reviews to help you find the right mower at an affordable price.

Why a Push Mower?

When I was a kid, a push mower meant a mower with several blades. As you pushed the mower the blades would spin and cut the grass. Of course you had to go over the same area many times to get a good cut. This type of mower is of course referred to now as a reel or push reel mower.

A push mower is a bit different. Most push mowers are gas powered though over the past few years there have been quite a bit of companies offering battery powered or electric push mowers. Some of the electric mowers operate on a charge or plug in to an outlet.

Electric push mowers initially were pretty lousy. Battery life was horrible and pushing a mower with a cord almost always ended in disaster. However, there have been significant improvements in battery life and even corded mowers are easier to use now. A good electric mower is the Black and Decker Lawn Hog.

Push mowers are a great choice for anyone with a small to medium size lawn to maintain. While they do make certain push mowers for commercial use (such as walk behind mowers), this category is for traditional push mower reviews.

How Long do Push Mowers Last?

Push mowers generally last between 5-10 years. They can last even longer with proper maintenance and care. If you want your mower to last even longer, I highly recommend storing the mower in a garage or covered area. Constant exposure to the elements will cause wear and reduce the mowers life.

Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog

Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 amp Electric Mulching Mower with Rear Bag

Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog 19-Inch 12 amp Electric Mulching Mower with Rear Bag With a name like lawn hog you would expect this mower to be a beastly machine that sucks down fuel. The Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog is however a corded electric lawn mower and produces zero emissions. There are many advantages to using an electric mower and the fact that they produce zero emissions is in my opinion the most important factor. There also many advantages to using a corded mower as well as some obvious cons. We’ll get into that in a bit but first let’s look at the technology and features offered on the Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog. Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog Features The Black & Decker MM875 certainly is one of the cooler looking electric mowers made by Black & Decker in my opinion. It has a 12 amp mower and a 19 inch cutting deck width. The Lawn Hog is designed to manage lawns up to a ¼ acre in size. Comfort features are important on any mower. The Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog can easily be adjusted making it comfortable to operate. Cutting height can also be easily adjusted ranging from 1 ¼ to 3 ½ inches. As far as grass management, you can either bag clippings or mulch. Mulching provides much needed nutrients to keep your lawn looking healthy and can protect your lawn against disease and even reduce the amount of water needed to flourish! Corded Vs. Cordless I’m going to try to be as unbiased as possible as honestly I’m not a big fan of corded mowers. Don’t get me wrong, I love electric mowers but I prefer those that can be charged and operate on an interchangeable battery system such as the Black & Decker CM1936. Okay, so there are of course some advantages to using a corded mower even over a battery powered mower. The first being you don’t have to worry about charging. You also don’t have to worry about running out of power or having the mower lag due to insufficient power. The Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog provides a consistent cut from start to finish. As far as the cons, a corded mower is limited as to how far away from an outlet you can mow. The Lawn Hog can mow up to a 100 feet radius from an outlet. In my opinion this limitation can be a nuisance but you could always of course plug in a longer extension cord. Another downfall to using a corded mower is cord management. I don’t care how good a mower is or the technology used to try and keep the cord out of the way, it’s still there and can still be annoying. Using a corded mower requires some though regarding mowing pattern. I personally like to zone out when I mow but you need to pay attention when using a corded mower. This is of course a personal preference but nevertheless something to be considered. My Personal Thoughts on the Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog There are some key features that I love about this mower as well as a few things I don’t like. I definitely like that it produces zero emissions. I also like that it is a money saver and energy efficient. I really like that the Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog has a 19 inch cutting deck width. This makes it easy to maneuver into places larger mowers can’t. Yet, the cutting deck is wide enough that you won’t be spending all day mowing the lawn. Being able to mulch or bag clippings is another plus. The final feature I like about this mower is easy height adjustment for the operator. Cutting height is also easy to adjust. Now, what I don’t like about the Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog. I don’t like corded mowers. I also don’t like corded mowers that can only mow within 100 feet from the outlet. That’s really my only complaint and I realize it’s a personal preference so I can’t be too hard on the Lawn Hog. Now let’s take a look at what owner’s have to say about their purchase and level of satisfaction with the Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog. What Owner’s have to say about the Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog From nearly 700 customer reviews, the Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog received an average 4 star rating out of a possible 5. Some of the comments included: “It is very lightweight and easy to use” and, “No messing around with gas and oil, spark plugs, filters, and all that goes with gas mowers.” The majority of owners are satisfied with their purchase of the Lawn Hog. The common complaints mostly had to do with cord management. Others felt it lacked power and often had to go over the same area twice. All in all, I think the Black & Decker MM875 Lawn Hog is a quality mower as long as you don’t mind cord management. Husqvarna 7021P 21-Inch Gas Powered Push Lawn Mower

Husqvarna 7021P: A great Choice for Small to Average Size Lawns

Husqvarna 7021P Powered by a Honda GVC 160cc engine, the Husqvarna 7021P provides plenty of power for mowing small to medium sized yards. The 3 in 1 cutting system which is standard on all Husqvarna push mowers allows for mulch, rear bag collection, or side discharge. Mulching can really help keep your grass healthy by providing important nutrients conducive to lawn health.

One of the annoying things about push mowers are they can be difficult to maneuver. The 7021P has 12 inch tires making it extremely easy to maneuver even on difficult or uneven terrain. The large tires make it easier to turn as well so going around trees or sprinkler heads isn’t a problem. [Read more…]
